The Battle of the Philippine Sea

On the morning of 19th June 1944, Admiral Ozawa Jisaburo – commanding from the newly-completed armored carrier Taiho – received a report from land-based scout planes that a large American invasion fleet was approaching the Japanese bastion on the Marianas Islands. For the Imperial Navy, this was the moment they'd all been waiting for since 1941: the Kantai Kessen or the decisive naval battle that they believed would turn the tide of the war in their favor.
The occasion called for the deployment of nearly all of Japan's last functioning warships, which were assembled into one of the largest and most powerful fleets to ever grace the seas. Admiral Raymond Spruance's US Navy 5th Fleet, however, would make Ozawa's 1st Mobile Fleet blush.

Imperial Japanese Navy Order of Battle

United States Navy order of battle

The US Navy was more than willing to take part in the "decisive final battle", as years of military innovation and industrial mass production since the start of the war had given the American forces the edge both technologically and with regards to the training of their personnel.
At 10:00 A.M. American carriers picked up the signature of the approaching formations on their advanced radar arrays and immediately scrambled their squadrons to intercept.

With both forces hot on each other's tails, the stage was set for the largest and most decisive aircraft carrier battle of the Pacific War.
